Interview with Kendrick Lamar by Leslieann Elle Santiago
Video by Je Ne Sais Quoi Films
You know how you can love an artist and their music so much, you think ‘there’s no way this person can be that awesome in real life.’ Well, Kendrick Lamar actually is awesome in real life. His music and his state of mind are completely one. When Kendrick invited me over to the studio, I was excited to feel how his lyrical energy would translate. And let me tell you, conversation flowed as easy as his raps do. We discussed everything under the sun, from being crowned King of the West by Snoop Dogg, his Black Hippy movement, talks with Mos Def and Dr. Dre, and goals he’s still trying to reach. But of all I’ve learned about the California native, what stuck with me the most, is his modesty and humbleness. So what’s next for this Compton creative? Lamar says his debut album has a concept he’s been working on his whole life. “I’m gonna really tell the story of how a good kid was in a bad state… I held a lot of things back in interviews and in my music because I want to share it on a bigger scale.” So besides sweet stories told in song, Kendrick tells us; “It’s only gonna get better, I’m putting that in the universe right now.” And I think we all hear him.
I Like Yo Style: Jean Lebrun
Video shot by Bijan, Edited by Tara Malony
Jean Lebrun is one of those people you can spot a mile away. Not just because he’s super tall, but because he’s usually dressed in something most dudes wouldn’t have the balls too. Typically in an array of prints and colors, he’s one third of the music group Jersey Klan, as well as an event curator, and designer. Though a native of New Jersey, Jean has created quite the presence both there and in New York City, a place he loves. But for his wardrobe, Jersey is his secret weapon. The salvation armies there hold some great treasures at some un-beatable prices. But it doesn’t matter where Jean shops, he’s going to create a vibrant look for himself anyway. Even if it means sewing a pair of baggy cargos into drop-crotch skinnies, he’ll do it. He’s fearless because he’s comfortable. Jean is often displaying statement pieces of jewelry, many made by friends, so they’re truly one of a kind. But sometimes he’ll skip that and rock a wicker basket with leather straps around his neck instead. It’s convenient for all his special things…like a lighter. More fire.

I Like Yo Style: Tata
Video shot by Bijan, Edited by Tara Malony
Tata is the craziest Russian girl I’ve ever had the pleasure to know. She’s a student and member of NYC’s Get Active crew, raging a party near you. You can usually catch her creeping around NYC with wide cat eyes, accessories on top of accessories, and a cigarette in one hand. She creates a lot of her own pieces, mix-matches everything, wears flatforms because she’s short but won’t mess with heels, has an amazing collection of broaches and says just about her entire wardrobe is thrifted. Basically, she’s a walking conversation piece. From her different hair do’s to her embellished jackets, she’s just dripping in amazement. Her style is just a mirror image of her personality. We visited the social butterfly at her Brooklyn apartment, which she shares with her artist sister, and now you get to see why we love her so much.

The Holiday season was probably the perfect time to see Asher Roth live for the first time. I went last month and everyone was in the Holiday spirit. Roth himself entertained the crowd in a bright red hoody. Though the show started later than scheduled the people were still full of enthusiasm. The setting was so peaceful with dimmed lights and sparkles of white light scattered around the stage. It was almost romantic, or maybe it was just his boyish charm and effortless delivery that had me at hello. Though I know I wasn’t the only one. Girls with their Iphones grinned like kids on Christmas as they captured their date with Asher. The show truly did feel intimate. He talked about his new album Pabst and Jazz, about his band, and about his friends. No hip hop performance would be complete without some homies. Roth brought along Action Bronson, Asap Twelvy, and Hassani Kwess to bless us with some music. But my favorite part of the show was when Asher asked the venue for green and blue lights. Those colors represent tranquility and it was then that I realized how dope this kid must really be.
